Carl Wilhelm Kolbe, the nephew of the great Polish-German etcher Daniel Chodowiecki (1728-1801), was one of the most original and prolific printmakers of the Romantic period.
The present print perfectly represents his style and his rather eccentric obsession with trees and plants - preferable ones with giant leaves. He said of himself that 'trees have turned me into an artist' (see: Bartrum, p. 172).
