Catherine Vanisttart (née Powney) was the daughter of Thomas Powney of the Honourable East India Company Service and Amelia Morse. In 1783 she married Henry Vansittart II (1755-1786), also of the Honourable East India Company Service. Unfortunately, their marriage was short lived with Henry's premature death in 1786, though in their short marriage, they did have a son, Henry III. The present portrait was executed in 1789, when Henry III would have been five years old.

We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
