Born in Cork, Buck first moved to Dublin in his early 20's to establish himself as a portrait painter. It was from here that he travelled the country for commissions. In 1795 he moved to London, where he would remain based for the remainder of his life.

Whilst the sitter of this full-length portrait remains unknown, it is thought that the cathedral in the background is Bristol Cathedral.
