Attempts to identify this coat-of-arms and link it to a particular family have failed. It is presumably an invention and an assemblage of various heraldic elements, such as the shield with the rampant lion, the helmet, the scrollwork and the cockerel. Dürer may have created it in order to attract commissions for similar designs. The intricacy of the acanthus scrollwork, the light glistening on the metallic surface of the helmet, and the fluffiness of the bird's feathers attest to the growing technical virtuosity of the artist as an engraver.
