This painting is a version of a work by Canaletto (1697-1768) last seen at sale at Christie’s in London (8 December 1995, lot 76). On stylistic grounds, the original can be dated to the 1750s, when Constable was working in England. Another autograph version of the painting, previously on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (see Constable, op. cit., no. 512), has a note on the relining canvas that claims the painting was originally signed and date 1754 on the reverse, further supporting this hypothesis.

The present work differs from Canaletto’s painting in the lower left-hand corner, where the original depicts a gilded barge with an oriental figure, whilst the present work shows a grassy bank. This is important to note, because the drawing that relates to the composition also includes the bank rather than a barge (see ibid, no. 825). This indicates that the artist of the present painting knew both Canaletto’s drawing and the painting (from which it borrows the two boats in the waterway that do not appear in the drawing).
