BURGUNDIAN SCHOOL C.1500, SAINT BENIGNUS, OIL AND TEMPERA ON GOLD GROUND PANEL

The martyrdom of Saint Benignus, which hagiography places in the 2nd century, is one of the founding subjects of Burgundian iconography. According to tradition, Benignus is said to have travelled from Ephesus, his place of birth, to Autun as part of the evangelisation of Gaul, passing through Langres before arriving in Dijon, where he was martyred for refusing to abjure his faith. His torment, symbolised by awls driven under his fingernails, two lances piercing his body diagonally and an iron bar shattering his skull, offered painters rich dramatic material, poised between bodily suffering and spiritual elevation, and structuring local artistic production. This same iconography is found, among other examples at the top of the cantoral staff of the cantor of the Abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon (musée Archéologique, Dijon, inv. Arb. 1376, fig. 1), dated to the second half of the 15th century.
