Descriptif du lot

Tigers, revered in Chinese ancient mythology for their bravery and nobility, embody the auspicious wishes for strength, power, and protection. Thus, tiger motifs were traditionally placed in homes, temples, as well as on children's clothing for protection. Likewise, tiger-form pillows were intended to protect their users at night by warding off evil spirits.

A similarly modeled tiger-form pillow with a bird painting on the top, previously in the Avery Brundage Collection, is in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and illustrated by Y. Mino in Freedom of Clay and Brush through Seven Centuries in Northern China: Tz'u-chou Type wares, 960-1600 A.D., Indianapolis, pp. 208-9, pl. 92.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. P97t73 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
