Primarily a landscape painter of the Barbizon School, Harpignies seldom treated oriental motifs. But a similar drawing appeared on the French art market in 1995 (sale, Hôtel Drouot (Tajan), Paris, 27 October 1995, lot 205), dated 1894. Both of them expressive of the Japonisme movement which became prevalent in France in the late-19th century.
