Kadampa stupas are often mythologized as being associated with the great Indian master Atisha (c. 982-1054 CE) who established the Kadam school of Buddhism in Tibet. The form is characterized by its bell-shaped bottom, balustrade harmika which supports a raised conical spire, and parasol finial topped by a lotus bud. The style is always left ungilded. Other similar examples sold at Sotheby's, New York, 22 March 2018, lot 1056 and at Christie's, New York, 13 September 2011, lot 335.
