Drawn in 1890, Fillette aux longs cheveux is a portrait of Jeannie Gobillard, the artist's niece. The drawing was executed in Mézy, a small village in the valley of the Seine, where Berthe Morisot, her husband Eugène Manet, and their daughter Julie were spending their summer in a spacious rented house, and would eventually purchase a home of their own in the fall of 1891, the Château du Mesnil.
