Toson became a monk in 1774 and changed his name from Matashiro to Toson, the name that he used to sign this screen. For other paintings by Toson, see Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, ed., Unkokuha no keifu - Sesshu no kokeisha tachi/Unkoku School - The Successors of Sesshu Style (Yamaguchi: Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, 1986), no. 58, reference plates 66 and 67.
