Further details
FRANÇOIS BOUCHER, 'TRAVAIL AU CHAMP', RED CHALK, TRACES OF WHITE CHALK

This early red chalk drawing by François Boucher may be compared with another sheet in the same medium, An Outdoor Country Meal, in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (inv. 1938 (444); A. Laing, The Drawings of François Boucher, exh. cat., New York, The Frick Collection, Fort Worth, Kimbell Art Museum, 2003-2004, no. 11). The handling of the foliage on the branches, the treatment of the figures’ faces, particularly the eyes indicated by a single stroke of the chalk, and the undulating line used to define their contours all provide striking points of comparison between the two sheets.
These so-called ‘transitional’ works were probably executed circa 1728-1731, either during Boucher’s stay in Italy or shortly after his return. At this time, he was still working in the tradition of Northern artists, depicting landscapes and rustic subjects, and was particularly influenced by Abraham Bloemaert and his highly sinuous use of line in the rendering of both figures and landscape.
The attribution to François Boucher has been confirmed by Alastair Laing (written communication, 5 December 2019). The work will be included in the catalogue raisonné of A.Laing and L.-A. Demazure, currently in preparation.

1 ; inv. 1938 (444) ; A. Laing, Les dessins de François Boucher, cat. exp., New York, Frick Collection, Forth Worth, Kimbell Art Museum, 2003-2004, n° 11).
