Introduced in the late 1980s, Audemars Piguet reference 56175 represents a more understated interpretation of the celebrated Royal Oak. With its compact 33 mm. case, the model retains all the defining characteristics of Gérald Genta’s iconic design, including the octagonal bezel secured by exposed screws, integrated bracelet and distinctive angular architecture, while offering a considerably more discreet presence on the wrist. The reference was produced in a variety of materials, including stainless steel, yellow gold and bi-metal combinations.
The present example, however, stands apart as an exceptionally rare stainless steel version fitted with a remarkable mother-of-pearl dial. In contrast to the characteristic ‘Tapisserie’ pattern most closely associated with the Royal Oak, its smooth surface displays constantly changing shades of white, blue and black according to the light. The natural iridescence of the material lends the watch an elegant and subtly opulent character while creating a fascinating contrast with the distinctly industrial architecture of the stainless steel case and bracelet.
Powered by a quartz movement, reference 56175 represents an interesting chapter in the evolution of the Royal Oak. By combining quartz technology with the unmistakable aesthetic codes of the collection in a more compact format, Audemars Piguet broadened the scope of Gérald Genta’s original design while preserving its essential identity. With its unusual mother-of-pearl dial and stainless steel construction, the present watch is a particularly distinctive and rarely encountered interpretation of the reference.
