The story of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar began in 1984, following an extensive development process that brought one of watchmaking’s most prestigious complications to Gérald Genta’s iconic sports-watch design. As the collection evolved, the addition of a leap-year indication became increasingly desirable, leading Audemars Piguet to update the calibre 2120⁄2800 in 1996, resulting in the calibre 2120⁄2802.
Produced in 1'241 examples between 1996 and 2010, reference 25820 became the most widely produced Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar powered by the calibre 2120⁄2802. Following its discontinuation, the complication would not return to the forefront of the Royal Oak collection until 2015, with the introduction of the larger 41 mm. reference 26574 and calibre 5134.
Among the rarest versions of reference 25820 are those executed entirely in platinum. Distinguished by their considerable weight and discreet appearance, just over 70 platinum examples with matching bracelets were manufactured and sold between 1998 and 2006. According to the Audemars Piguet archives, four dial variations were available: Tuscany Blue with Petite Tapisserie, engraved Tuscany Blue, ‘Old Pink’ with Grande Tapisserie, and blue mother-of-pearl.
The present watch is fitted with the particularly striking blue mother-of-pearl dial, whose natural iridescence ensures that each example possesses an individual character. Combined with the substantial platinum case and bracelet, it represents one of the rarest and most distinctive configurations of reference 25820.
