The Procession of Silenus is one of Agostino's most accomplished prints, presumably executed when he was fully aware of Marcantonio Raimondi's way of highlighting and modeling, and able to replicate and mediate this manner of engraving with his own Venetian influences.
The design for this engraving is probably based on a lost drawing by Raphael or Giulio Romano, which is known only through later copies. The original drawing in turn must have been inspired by an ancient Roman sarcophagus, kept today at Woburn Abbey ('Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne' - www.database.census.de, ID 159227).
