This very rare and enchanting print is one of three 'portraits' of dogs (see also the following lot), all of which are probably based on his studies for his large painting of the 3rd Duke of Richmond with the Charlton Hunt (circa 1759-60; now at Goodwood House).
The prints, with their soft gradations of shading and sensitive rendering of the texture of the dogs' coats, are testament to the experimental approach of Stubbs as a printmaker and the technical complexity of his work, as he layered soft-ground etching, roulette and punch work on top of each other to achieve the desired effects. The result is refined, subdued and atmospheric. A drawing in graphite of the same year, very likely to be model for the print and the respective detail of the painting, is at the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection (inv. no. B1985.36.1443).
