Jan Abrahamsz. Beerstraaten was the most prominent member of a Dutch family of painters. He was famed for his depictions of winter townscapes, which demonstrate a marked interest in the topography of mid-17th century Amsterdam. The present work is a very fine example of the cityscapes for which Beerstraten is known, and incorporates the famous windmills of Amsterdam.
